The brilliance of Dr. Seuss

Mon Dec 22, 2008, 10:38 PM
I have recently been inclined to reread all of our old Dr. Seuss books that I loved as a little kid. And I have come to the conclusion that people don't actually appreciate the brilliance of his writing, half as much as they should. I particularly admire the way he could take a word that wasn't even a word, and turn it into an adjective that could describe something better than a "real" adjective could. For example: " Snergelly" Which was used to describe a hose, could not possibly be replaced by any word in the dictionary, and still accomplish the same sort of description.
A few other of his words: Cruffulouse, Smogulouse, glumping.
what words could be better?
and also, phrases such as "and they had the sweet smell of fresh butterfly milk"
Do butterfly's even have milk? And if so does it have a sweet smell?
But does it matter? Perhaps it shouldn't matter If a word is a real word, or if it is realistic or not, if it works, then it should most certainly, not only be allowed, but encouraged, in writing.

" I am the lorax. I speak for the trees.
I speak for the trees, for the trees have no tongues
and i'm asking you, sir, at the top of my lungs
WHAT IS THAT THING YOU'VE MADE OUT OF MY TRUFFULA TUFT!?"
